Helicopters’ achilles heel: gearboxes continue to sabotage aviation
A few weeks ago, the world was shocked by the tragic death of nine people in yet another helicopter crash. From the description of eye witnesses it was most likely caused by intermediary or tail rotor gearbox failure. When either one of those gearboxes fail, the helicopter violently spins out the sky.
You probably heard the news about Kobe Bryant, but just weeks earlier there was a deadly helicopter crash in the Philippines that took three lives, and a month earlier yet another deadly crash.
Remember the ‘80s?
The main cause of helicopter accidents is gearbox failure. Experts in the field have known for decades that more advanced lubricants could double or triple the life of a gearbox. The NATO Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development published this report that contains the findings of a symposium on the subject of helicopter and turboprop gearbox reliability that was held in Portugal back in 1984.
I was only seven years old in 1984, so I was unable to attend.
Thanks to NATO, we have a written record of what was said. It’s an extensive archive containing almost 400 pages. If you take the time to read it, you will understand how extensive gearbox reliability problems really are. One of the conclusions the symposium came to was that current lubricants could be dramatically improved with advanced additive chemistry. tailored specifically for helicopter and aviation gearbox applications (check out page 28 and the article on lubrication).
A quarter century later…
But guess what. A quarter century later and the aviation industry still uses the exact same specs for lubricants as before. Not only do they use the same specs, but they still buy from the same vertically integrated suppliers. NOTHING HAS CHANGED!
In this timeframe, over 500 helicopters crashed worldwide. If the industry had listened to those early expert recommendations, the death toll and risk of flying would be substantially lower.
So in 2011 I wrote a report demonstrating how TriboTEX dual-sided nanoparticle technology is the perfect treatment for the transmissions of flying machines. I submitted an extensive proposal to a prominent tech accelerator run by a large oil company. It’s no secret that they transport a lot of workers to off-shore sites by helicopters and protecting those workers protects their bottom line. Not to mention, deploying the technology to a global fleet of aircrafts is a new revenue stream that would give them a competitive edge in the commodity market.
A few days after I submitted the proposal, I received an enthusiastic call from the person in charge of the project; we’ll call him Ted. Ted said that mine was among the best technology submissions he had received in a while. He did his due diligence and in a short time had built an investment information docket and was ready to present it to their investment board. I was ecstatic! This company is among the key players in lubrication and their support would be game changing… I went to bed smiling!
I found a burning moat of oil in the dragon's den.
The next day, Ted called me with bad news. He had sent the investment docket to one of the managers and got called into their office right away. In a brief talk, the manager explained that oil companies make way more money on fuel than they could ever make on lubricants—even if they had the entire lubricant market to themselves. Any lubrication technology that reduces fuel consumption will never be directly or indirectly supported by them… and if Ted disagreed he should find himself another job!
So that is why oil companies don’t want to invest in TriboTEX. Because our technology is making the world less dependent on them. Our mission is to make machines more durable, reliable, and efficient. The performance gains are an added bonus.
We’re thrilled that the Air Force shares those goals and is partnering with us to develop the next generation of lubrication. Pilots and other airmen deserve unmatched safety. It's our country's duty to not compromise that safety for profit.
The people that made your car don’t want it to last longer. The people that fuel your car don’t want it to be more efficient. Even your trusted neighborhood mechanic doesn’t want it to be more reliable.
But we do.
Support us today and let’s share the benefits. Only 24 hours are left for the best offer we’ve made in five years. Take advantage of the ultra-low launch price of TriboTEX Transmission (including ATF, Manual, and Rear Differential treatments) before it’s too late!

Lauren's Transmission Story: trivial tune-ups, phony flushes, and other tall tales my mechanic (almost) sold me
almost 5 years ago
– Wed, Feb 05, 2020 at 08:17:40 PM
"That will be $326 dollars, ma'am."
I waited patiently for my 2006 Jeep Liberty at the dealership. The mechanic started going over everything that needed fixing, and one item instantly jumped out at me. I couldn't believe my eyes—$326 dollars, for a transmission flush? "Yeah, you need to do that every once in a while, and it's about time," he told me.
Many people out there have a similar story. Just hearing the word "transmission" at the mechanic can be scary, since the average cost of replacing one in most vehicles is around $2,000 dollars.... if you're lucky!
Then, as fate would have it, I crossed paths with Dr. Pasha, the founder and CTO of TriboTEX. I met him years ago at a business plan competition at the University of Idaho, where the TriboTEX team took 1st place. Since then, I’ve followed their story as they’ve won numerous innovation awards and received prestigious grants from the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, NASA, and more.
I asked Pasha why my transmission fluid would need to be changed. He told me that excessive friction in the transmission leads to accelerating degradation of the liquid. If you don’t flush out the bad stuff, the deteriorating fluid will wear out your transmission, leading to premature failure. One morning, you’ll be sitting in your car, engine purring like normal, but you won’t be able to move an inch.
My car was parked nearby, so we popped the hood and checked my transmission fluid. The color was a light pink, just as it should be. I bought my car a little over a year ago, and I am pretty confident the dealership had done a flush. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that a different dealership was trying to squeeze more money out of me!
My transmission fluid was fine, but the whole ordeal had me wondering how I could be proactive and keep expensive transmission repairs as far away as possible. Pasha is a material scientist and lubrication expert who discovered a wear reversing nanoparticle while working on his PhD. After finishing his degree, he founded TriboTEX and developed treatments for all kinds of vehicles and machines. This powerful little particle is now inside tens of thousands of engines, protecting vulnerable components while boosting performance and efficiency.
Because of the differences between engine oil and ATF fluid, until now transmissions and gearboxes have required custom solutions. My timing could not have been better, because Pasha’s team just finished testing a brand new ATF treatment called TriboTEX Transmission.
I didn't understand the science at first, but Pasha explained how the dual-sided nanoparticles repair my automatic transmission by forming a Diamond-Like Carbon coating where the surface has eroded from friction, like a new finish on an antique table. Just like the rest of the product line, TriboTEX Transmission is non-toxic and made in the USA. In fact, Pasha’s discovery came from his quest for a cleaner lubricant for the wind turbines that power our nation. That gave me confidence that the treatment was safe for the environment, the economy, and my car. Flush that, dealership!
I added TriboTEX Transmission to my Jeep through the ATF dipstick tube—it literally took five seconds—and I've been so happy with the results. I feel more at ease knowing my transmission can repair itself. I saved hundreds of dollars by skipping the unnecessary flush, and I am saving thousands of dollars in the long-run by protecting my transmission.
As a journalist, I’m curious if you’ve ever had a similar experience with your transmission.
Mechanics are known for trying to take advantage of women like me, but I would bet my two fuzzy dice that men are conned into phony flushes just as often. What's your experience, TriboTEX fan? Leave a comment and with your take.

How Outdated Lubricants Endanger Lives
The military has an artillery tactic essential for unit survival called Shoot-and-Scoot, which essentially means rapid relocation from the point where you fired to the next location. Once you shoot, you reveal your location to the enemy; to avoid being the target yourself, you have to move.
Modern weapon stabilization systems enabled self-propelling artillery and tanks to shoot in motion with good accuracy. But here is the problem: firing heavy artillery rounds sends an immediate and profound shock to the drivetrain, shearing the lubricating film. Microwelds rapidly form on gearings and bears, intensifying wear dramatically.
So because of outdated lubricants, tanks can either shoot OR scoot but never both at the same time…
Here is where TriboTEX comes in:
TriboTEX anisotropic dual-sided nanoparticles attach to the surface one by one, not like an orderly tile job by a skilled mason, but in a random pattern with many passages and crevices that form a porous ceramic layer. The pores in that layer are filled with a lubricant, so when a shock event occurs and the layer is compressed, excess lubricant is pushed out of the ceramic film to support the load and separate parts. When that porous layer compacts it also gets denser, protecting the surface even better. This is exactly how the most advanced tribological interface of the human body functions—cartilage.
Did you know the U.S. Air Force gave us a grant to adapt our lubricating nanotechnology for a variety of military applications, including helicopter gearboxes and tanks?
Cartilage is a porous protein polymer filled with synovial fluid. When compressed, the synovial fluid is released, lubricating the interface to create near frictionless motion even under high load. TriboTEX nanoparticles were actually discovered by biomimicry—attempting to synthesize or simulate this amazing bodily function.
In fact, the earliest research on TriboTEX was conducted at the Washington State University Biomaterials lab and focused on nanomaterials for hip and knee implants—materials that are so safe and durable they can be placed inside the human body for years. One unique outlier reduced friction so dramatically, it breached the theoretical barrier of superlubricity (friction coefficient <0.01). It was apparent that this clean and safe technology could benefit not only aging joints but also industrial, military, and consumer machines.
All it really takes is the proper mix of nanoparticles with an existing lubricant. Under the heat and pressure generated by friction they self-assemble on the most vulnerable sites, like tiny nanobots working overtime to form a resilient porous coating that rivals the cartilage in your (I assume very youthful) joints. This coating not only protects at-risk metals, but actually fills in the grooves and scores that mar the surface, restoring the structure and reversing wear.
Similar to how a new finish can revitalize a scuffed up antique table, except TriboTEX includes select platinum group catalysts that enable the formation of a diamond-like carbon (DLC) cap. Other methods of achieving a DLC coating are extremely costly and time-consuming; ours applies itself as you drive.
TriboTEX already offers engine treatments for all kinds of machines. Whether you drive a motorcycle, hybrid, or eighteen-wheeler, you can be more efficient. Now we are introducing TriboTEX Transmission, an ATF treatment that restores your gearbox to a better than new condition with diamond-like armor on critical components. (manual version coming soon!)
